AJRAKH

Meaning & Origin: Believed to mean "keep it today" (aaj rakh) or derived from the Arabic word for blue (azraq). Practiced by the Khatris in Kutch, Gujarat, and Sindh.

The Process: A staggering 14-to-16-step process of resist-printing and natural dyeing. It involves washing, treating the fabric with camel dung and castor oil, and repeatedly stamping it with hand-carved wooden blocks using resist pastes. It relies heavily on madder (red) and indigo (blue).

Time Investment: Approximately 3 to 4 weeks per batch.

The Artisanal Specialty: Ajrakh is an architectural marvel of block printing. The blocks must align perfectly on both sides of the fabric (double-sided print). The final colors are dictated by the mineral content of the local river water, rooting the fabric directly to its geography.
