Meaning & Origin: The word comes from the Sanskrit 'banda', meaning "to tie." It originated in the Indus Valley Civilization but is profoundly rooted in Gujarat and Rajasthan (specifically practiced by the Khatri community).

The Process: This is an intricate tie-dye technique. Artisans pluck tiny pinches of fabric with their fingernails (or a metal ring) and tightly bind them with continuous thread before dyeing. When the bindings are removed, a pattern of un-dyed dots reveals the design.

Time Investment: Depending on the density of the dots, a single piece can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to tie and dye.

The Artisanal Specialty: Its rarity lies in the sheer microscopic precision of the human hand. No machine can replicate the tactile, slightly raised texture (the "crinkle") left behind by the knots.
