CHIKANKARI

Meaning & Origin: Believed to have been introduced by Nur Jahan, the Mughal Empress, Chikankari translates to "embroidery." It is the pride of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

The Process: It begins with block-printing a pattern onto sheer fabric (like muslin, georgette, or silk). Artisans then use up to 32 different traditional white-thread embroidery stitches (like the famous shadow work or bakhiya) to trace the motifs. The fabric is then washed to remove the printed ink.

Time Investment: 1 to 6 months, heavily dependent on the intricacy and the specific stitches used.

The Artisanal Specialty: True Chikankari is defined by its pristine, minimalist elegance. The tension of the thread pulled by a human hand creates a delicate bas-relief effect that machines flatten and ruin.
