INDIGO

Meaning & Origin: Named after Indigofera tinctoria, the plant from which this deep blue natural dye is extracted. India is the oldest center of indigo dyeing.

The Process: The leaves are fermented in vats to release the dye. The fabric is dipped into a yellowish-green liquid and then exposed to the air. The magic happens during oxidation, where the fabric turns deep blue right before the artisan's eyes. Multiple dips are required for darker shades.

Time Investment: Fermenting the vat takes over a week; the dyeing and oxidation process takes several days of repetitive dipping and drying.

The Artisanal Specialty: Natural indigo is a "living" dye. It ages, fades gracefully, and interacts with the wearer's environment. The subtle variations in depth and tone can never be matched by synthetic chemical blues.
