Meaning & Origin: Translates to "pen work" (kalam = pen, kari = craftsmanship). Rooted in Andhra Pradesh (Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam).

The Process: Artisans use a bamboo pen wrapped in cotton to draw intricate mythological motifs or nature-inspired vines. The fabric is treated with cow milk and myrobalan. The dyes are entirely natural, derived from roots, leaves, and iron rust (which creates the distinct black outline).

Time Investment: 4 to 6 weeks, as the fabric must be naturally bleached in the sun and washed in flowing rivers between each color application.
