KANCHIPURAM (KANJIVARAM)

Meaning & Origin: Named after the temple town of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. Known as the "Queen of Silks."

The Process: Woven from heavy, pure mulberry silk and pure gold/silver zari. It famously utilizes the Korvai technique, where the border and body are woven separately and interlocked seamlessly by hand.

Time Investment: 15 days to several months, requiring two weavers working in tandem on the pit loom to interlock the heavy borders.

The Artisanal Specialty: The pure weight, contrasting colors, and structural integrity of the weave. The interlocking Korvai joint is a testament to extreme technical skill, ensuring the silk falls with a majestic, sculptural drape.
