Meaning & Origin: Initiated by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar in the 18th century in Maheshwar,
Madhya Pradesh.

The Process: Woven on pit looms, it traditionally blends a silk warp with a cotton weft. It is
instantly recognizable by its distinct geometric borders (often inspired by the local fort's
architecture) and the Bugdi technique, which makes the border completely reversible.

Time Investment: 1 to 2 weeks for a standard weave.

The Artisanal Specialty: The brilliance of Maheshwari lies in its lightweight, airy texture
combined with the regal, sharply defined zari borders. The reversible border means it can be
worn on either side, a testament to the flawless logic of its loom setup.
